The Optimist Blog
I happen to be living in state that will be allowing the public to vote on whether or not we should ban gay marriage. My plan is to write in a vote, because I definately think we need to ban certain types of marriage....heterosexual marriage, for example. It's been a disaster, I say we do away with it and allow ONLY gay couples to marry for the next...oh, I don't know...thousand years or so? We could use science to propogate the species and thus prevent hateful little zealots from seizing an institution that belongs to everyone. If you look at the divorce rate, if you look at the number of children and spouses abused each year, it's clear that these religious fanatics are attempting to protect something that they themselves have only diminished and wasted.
My absolute favorite argument against gay marriage is that it's "unnatural". Sorry, but popcorn chicken is unnatural. Strip malls, cheese whiz, plastic surgery...these are unnatural. Homosexuality is as old as sexuality itself. "But same-sex marriage demeans a cherished institution that has belonged to men and women for thousands of years." I would like to point Christians to a few other institutions: The court system. The educational system. Our military organization....hmmm, who was it that invented these? I can't seem to...oh yeah, the Greeks! The horny, insatiable, bi-sexual Greeks, who also invented a little thing called democracy. So, if you feel that gays weaken the institution of marriage, you should also reject every single facet of American life, because it was all started by the Greeks, okay? "But Christ said..." Shut up. Christ said "love your nieghbor." Christ said "love your enemy". He used the word love a lot, you'll notice. Think about that. Think about the word 'love' and try practicing it for a change. Share it, cherish it, just stop obstructing it.
*sigh* In all likelihood the ban will pass in this state. Bush, unquestionably, will win on November 2nd. Things are about to change here, and our reptilian mid-brain is about to have it's day.

I agree. Marriage is a broken institution. We should instead be focusing on civil unions and partnerships for same-sex, bi-sexual, or hetero. My fear is that we are on the cusp of a dark age with Bush and the conservatives.
