Democracy for the Disinterested

Well, Bovine America did manage to roll itself into the voting booth yesterday with predictable results. As of 3a.m. central time the results are still not finalized but be it today or a week from today, Bush has been re-elected. Ideally democracy would be an everyday lifestyle, not just voting but learning, thinking, holding people accountable. Instead we turn out on November 2nd to vote and then immediately run back to our televisions sets, collapsing into a numb stare, passive spectators for the rest of the year. America: the One-Day Democracy. Essentially what was affirmed yesterday was not any particular candidate, but a principle, perhaps the most cherished principle we currently hold in this country. It's an ideal that Bush embodies perfectly: our actions have absolutely no consequences. We are "free" people in this country, meaning we feel free to consume, to attack, to strike out impulsively in a thousand ramdom ways as the consequences vanish into the spectacle. That is what we've voted for: to stagger distracted, blind and sated and fat.
Final news updates: 11 states have voted to ban gay marriage. Republicans have gained seats in the house and senate. We are receiving word that in the bible belt of the south Arkansas is the gaudy, over-sized buckle. And finally: the television will not be revolutionized. Thanks.

Blah, blah, blah. You're predictable. Stop saying the same things. Write about happy stuff, you know? Like low-carb beer and pop-tarts. And stop saying the same things. Seriously.

Matt, are you talking to yourself again? Stop it! Shape up! The world needs people of sanity now more than ever. It's your duty and that of every other intelligent, caring American to stand up and be counted, with t-shirts saying 'we're not all total c**ts you know' and guest slots on export shows like Oprah.

Just don't get scared. They want you to be scared. They'll have most Americans a lot more scared in one, two, three years time than they were yesterday. Reject fear. If they think you a nutter for doing so, then damn it - be a HAPPY nutter. Trust me, it will really piss 'em off.

Bring on American's true political awakening, which can be found waking up in the underground and the disenfranchised and the rejected. When there are people lined up against the wall, people will start to fight. Go out. Get drunk. Get laid. Have fun. Practice the art of true, sinful, natural LIVING. They don't like it. At least, they don't want anyone to openly do that kind of thing.

Okay, you're right. I'll try and shape it up...it's just hard. *sigh* I just see so many people mouthing words that have been drilled into their heads by manipulative politicians. "Bush is a strong leader", "Bush is a man of faith", all of it annunciated pavlovian, monotone fashion. I've just had zero faith in people (well, in groups) and elections like this just reinforce why. I'm not doing a very good job of cheering up am I? I'll look for Saving Grace today, thanks for the recommendation.

And believe me, these clowns aren't the least bit scary to 49% of us here, they've just used their scare tactics to manipulate the lowest common demominator, the obese sheep here who desperately love to obey...which, apparently, make up the other 51%. Probably the same morons that make reality television and popcorn chicken so popular. I'm not scared, I'm just disgusted with what this place has become.

A perceptive posting, Matt. It's a society of taking what you can get away with. It shouldn't surprise us, I gues, when the government behaves the same way. Self-righteously. The only benefit I can see to having a democracy is that it keeps the government on its toes, fearful it might get dumped come next election. Otherwise, both parties have to pander to the lowest common denominator, not giving anybody a lot of choice. Except in a very vague, general way. But now Bush can't get elected again, so he personally doesn't have much to lose. True, he can cause the Democrats to win next time, but his bluster might cause him to ignore that and do whatever he feel like. Who knows. At any rate, it's not something I'm looking forward to finding out.

As usual, your posts are insightful and right on target. I'm terrified of what will come during the next four years. I think it will be a bloody time...

My only hope is that all those people and organizations that combined into movements against Bush and the extremists will not develop moral lassistude, become apathetic, but instead be invigorated to fight harder. And Stan is right - Bush can't be elected again. Let that knowledge see us through.
