I Antagonize the Locals

So, sort of upset about having to live in a red state, I wrote a letter to the paper here recently as a form of catharsis. It's not what you would call "educational", but it will be worth it if I get angry responses. I've got my fingers crossed. It's basically a repeat of the sorts of things I've said here, but I'll post it and if any responses show up in the paper I'll post those as well. Here it is:

Now, I'm not saying that Christianity is becoming a hate-based money-cult. The facts, unfortunately, say it for me. For example, holiday spending this year is expected to exceed 200 billion dollars. Think about that. Over the next month so-called Christians will be celebrating the birth of their messiah not by praying or buying a few small gifts. They will instead go on an orgy of consumer spending and blow more cash than most smaller nations make in an entire year. Never mind that Jesus would on occassion smack folks around for their greed (Matthew ch.21,v.12), I'm sure he's thrilled that we're buying DVD players and salad shooters in his name. Apparently, though, degrading Christ's birth isn't quite enough, we need to diminish his teachings as well.
President Bush was recently re-elected thanks in large part to his stance on "moral values" (although this plural usage is a little misleading since Bush actually stood for a single value, homophobia). Once upon a time living the Christian life meant following the full spectrum of Christ's teachings. You know the ones: helping the poor, rejecting greed, loving your enemy, etc. Boy, Christ sure had a tendency to ramble didn't he? Thankfully religious leaders like Pat Robertson and our very own Ronnie Floyd have lowered the moral bar considerably as a way to make things much easier for us. Now all you have to do is vote Bush, hate gays and you're in. It's that simple. You can toss out that love and tolerance nonsense Jesus talked about. Ignore that he spent most of his time with sinners, lepers and (perhaps worst of all) tax collectors. Salvation lies in the new morality of hatred and fear.
You might suspect that I'm operating under the influence of a bias, and you're right. I myself am not a Christian. But my point is that if you are a white, evangelical Bush-supporter: neither are you.

Happy Holidays,

Matt

By the way, Ronnie Floyd is a local pastor here who garnered attention when he encouraged his church to vote for Bush. He frequently preaches about the "dangers" of gay and lesbian couples trying to get married. Prick.

If I had thought of it at the time I would called him a "wanker" in the letter.

Hey, I am a Christian and I must say I do have to agree with some of your points. Many Christians today have forgotten the true meaning behind Christmas and hardly represent Christ by the way they spend money particularly around the Christmas season. Consumerism and materialism is a bug which infects many, across all faiths, agnostics and atheists alike. However I know many Christians who do break the mould you describe, who are compassionate, pro-humanitarian, people(inclusive of all sexual orientations)-loving Christians who seek to please God in the way they live their lives. I try to be one of these types although we all mess up cos we're human! By the way I live in London so I'm quite naive about American politics and far right-wing 'Christians' giving Christianity a bad name.

PS-You know a lot about the nature of Christ for a non-believer. You speak as though you accept his existence??

Saw your comment on Ms. Liberty's site that you wrote to "Ric" in re bumper stickers. Matt: You should tell Ms. Liberty to take your advice. The best she can do is restate Al Franken book titles and bad ticker lines from channels she supposedly is not watching. This was her comment at the http://www.thehounds.blogspot.com where she uses phrases like "Fair and Balanced" and "Fux news", and finally, the best one from Ms. Llame Liberty, "What does Fatass Rush have to say? Has that sleazeball been dragged away for his illegal drug use yet?..." Just remember Matt this is one of your people.

Christmas is a festival stolen by the captalists from the Christians who had stolen it from the pagans.

Christopher: You're right and it's sad to me, because Christmas really could be a respectful tradition, it doesn't have to be what it has become. I would actually like to know the history of Christmas in this country...when exactly did corporations begin to consciously exploit it? There must be a great deal of literature out there on this.

Noami: I agree completely with what you say. Most Christians that I know are wonderful people, and the group that I describe in the letter actually make up a small minority in the Christian community. Unfortunately, they are just the ones that have done a better job gaining political power. I should just put more effort into not generalizing!
I actually was Christian for much of my life, even to the point of attending a religious college. There I became an atheist....which in all honesty requires just as much faith as religion. I'm probably closer to an agnostic, but I do feel that there is no deity that actually overlooks things, no personally involved deity. However, given the frequency with which I am wrong, what do I know? Anyway, thanks for responding!

By the way, Naomi made this point: "Consumerism and materialism is a bug which infects many, across all faiths, agnostics and atheists alike." It's true, and also a little weird, isn't it? I'm a non-believer yet I still buy gifts for my family each year for Christmas. It shows the extent to which corporations have trained us in Pavlovian fashion, it's depressing. It also proves something else, but I've forgotten...what?...oh yeah: I'm a fat hypocrite. Thanks.

Hi Matt. Great letter you wrote. It's hard to imagine how they would actually give rebuttals. I guess it's too early yet for their letters to appear? At least you've got this guy Ric, although he seems a bit timid for a real bull-horned Texan conservative. You know, I don't really think these people are Christians. Actually they're watered down Klu Klux Klanners, using Christianity to make themselves feel better with their hatred. For some reason anybody with any agenda seems to be able to twist Christianity any way they please and feel okay about it. Maybe it's because they simply have greater priorities than truth.

Matt, I don't know if it's true or an urban legend, but apparently Santa's suit only became red and white in the early 1900s - as I recall sometime up to 1920 - in a Coke ad campaign.

Christmas, bah humbug. I celebrate Yule on the 21st. If Christians want festivals, they should get their own. They've raped and pillaged everyone else's for over a millennia through an abject lack of imagination and sinister colonising instinct. It's time to kick them out of the calendar dates they've taken over and, in some ways, that's happening as more and more people 'revert' to the older ways which don't see women as the source of all sin, don't spend time on hate and prejudice and, above all else, don't see the world as a thing to use and abuse as a tool given us by the Lord.

What's really scary is that we now have fundamentalist Christians with real political power set against fundamentalist Moslems. It's a recipe for even more disaster than the Israel/Palestine conflict.

I'm so looking forward to visiting the US next year but I must make a vow to myself to acknowledge that Americans fall into two camps: the intelligently informed and those who are not. It's ultimately sad: yours is a beautiful country in many ways, when we cut through the pollutants in chemical, philosophical and political terms. I think you've got a fight on your hands to take America back out of the hands of the gun-totin', death penalty-lovin;, queerbashin' Jesus-lovin' hicks.

I can picture Christ now, saying "I got strung up for THESE people? No no no...."
