JFK
You know, I never saw Stone's movie on Kennedy. He seems like an interesting director but I never actually like his films. Natural Born Killers, for instance: good idea, bad execution. Platoon sort of sucks if you've seen Apocalypse now. What else has he done? Anyway, Alexander looks dull.
I may start the latest Neal Stephenson book today, his first volume of the Baroque Cycle. Brilliant stuff, he's one of the few high points in popular fiction. Any hope I had for this country vanished when the DaVinci Code became such a huge hit. The book's plot resembled a bad Saturday morning cartoon, it was painful to read. And actually I didn't even finish it. I can read anything, no matter how bad, but the DaVinci Code was too much. Inevitably they'll make a film on it with big stars....it will suck and therefore 99% of the nation will flock to see it. I'll complain...and then, on an afternoon of drinking, stumble into a theater and watch it. I've said it before: I suck immeasurably. Thanks.

Matt -- I love your site. Enjoy listening to your opinions you post on thehounds.blogspot.com. I am usually more moderate than you on most issues, but I agree with you on this one...I hate Oliver Stone films [even though I admit I have seen them all] but do enjoy listening to his interviews talking about filmmaking. I also agree with you on the Da Vinci COde. I am waiting for the movie. I think the popularity of this book like others comes from the always moneymaking mixing of salacious with ignorance. Nobody sees the relevance of Sunday school anymore nor remembers the basics of the religion so many claim to adhere to otherwise most would have laughed at the very premise of the book. But it is still a relatively free speaking country and gets people talking. Unfortunately I do predict at this rate that one day we will be talking about Christ and the New Testament the same way everyone spoke of the Force and the Jedis in Star Wars ...as legend and the ones who speak of it as crackpots. I am curious though what was your feeling on the Movie Team America by the South park creators?

You are absolutely right about this and its depressing. When it comes to morality there isn't a better example for people than Christ. Not only did he avoid attacking the views of other people, he actually sought out those who were most different from him and engaged them in dialogue. My favorite quality of his is that rather than tell people what they should and shouldn't do (which many Christians now are fond of doing), Christ simply used parables. He used metaphors so that you would have to figure out things on your own, he encourgared critical thinking as opposed to the group mentality that organized religion tends to foster. Anyway, it's just sad to see these Falwell types spreading intolerance the way they are.
I did see Team America...I thought it was funny. I especially loved the soundtrack, those guys have a real gift for satirical music. A lot of liberals didn't like that they largely focused on attacking Hollywood, but those were some of the funniest scenes. Overall, though, I didn't think it was quite as good as their South Park material. Did you get to see it?
Anyway, this country is in serious need of more moderates like yourself, so thanks for responding.
