Ye Old Mindset
It's not surprising. The U.S. military has decided that torture isn't so bad after all. I mean, when WE do it. When terrorists use torture, of course, it's an abomination. An AP news report describes how any information obtained through torture is admissable in court. So, here's my sort of crazy, out-there belief: people who use torture are animals. Governments that approve of torture are corrupt. Democracies that approve of torture are, in fact, tyrranies using the label "democracy" as a mask, a false front...a gimmick that allows its obese and distracted citizens to pat themselves on the back for their wonderful sounding phrases. "We're free! Hey, pass the buffalo wings." We really are an awful society. What kills me is that many Bush supporters are anti-abortion, they pay a lot of lip service to the sanctity of life. Yet here we are using torture, moving so far backwards that we are actually beginning to resemble some medieval nightmare.
Would anyone care to defend this? Hello?
Here's another insane proposal: to win the war on terror we have to provide for the world an alternative to extremism. In other words, we have to carefully make sure that our actions are consistent with our values. When we talk about democracy, but utilize war and torture...guess what? We look like better armed and better trained terrorists. Anyway, if it wasn't obvious to you before, it should be obvious now....Bush knows how to talk about "good" and "bad", but he is quickly losing his ability to distinguish between the two. "Good", for him, is becoming inconvenient, and his policies are a betrayal of everything we ought to be standing for in this country.
Thanks...
