Books

Okay, so I've finished the new Michael Crichton book State of Fear and I have to warn you: it sucks. Most of it is an attack on environmentalism, which is fine. He uses lots of research, backs up his claims, throws in numerous charts and graphs...but this is not the same thing as an interesting story. The book is 600 pages long and the vast majority of it is spent sermonizing. So, if you are looking for ammo against the evironmental movement, it might work for you, but otherwise its just dull, disappointing. I think after Rising Sun he really began to lose steam: Lost World...crap. Timeline...crap. State of Fear sort of confirms the genreal trend.

I am also reading cereal boxes. Now, if you haven't checked out the most recent release by Cheerios, you really should. It's an exciting insiders look at fast paced world of cholesteral management. The informative yet easy-to-read descriptions of basic dietary guidelines are highlighted by a sharp and accesible visual style. Cheerios is a welcome entry in the cereal box genre. Highly recommended.

What else? Oh, I'm reading the Phillip Pullman series, His Dark Materials. The first book is The Golden Compass. Written for "young readers" it really ends up being more of an all-ages sort of deal. It's infinitely better than the Harry Potter series, much darker and more sophisticated. Everyone should be reading it...right now. Go. I'm serious. I'll just wait here, you tell me when you're done, then we'll discuss...

the clock is ticking

I actually thought Timeline was fun. I also read and liked The Golden Compass.

I'm down on Crichton though, because rather than lose it quietly in his own home, he loses it loudly on a public stage ... and drags people off on his political tangent.

Hi there, thanks for the response. You basically hit the nail on the head...the problem with State of Fear is that he is very heavy-handed about his political viewpoint, and it just drags the story down. Most of my friends ended up liking Timeline as well, I'm in the minority on that one. And thanks for the post, I need all of the good info I can get. Take care...
