I Get All Touchy Feely, Tom Delay-style

So this mental turnip in Florida may finally kick the bucket, and here's what I think:

If republicans actually gave a shit about the right to life, they would have spent their weekend ordering feeding tubes for the 30 million Africans who are currently starving.

But, selective compassion does play well on the news, doesn't it? It reaches a broader demographic than, say, actual compassion, which tends to only do well in the coastal markets. It's a brilliant move by those wacky, yet media savvy, religious nuts we've all come to know and love.

Seems like true compassion would suggest all the Iraq money be spent on such problems as medical research to find cures for terminal conditions. Why not try and make it so people never end up like Terri Schiavo?

There is enough money there that it could probably help provide food for lots of people in need around the world. I think the United States needs to feed the world, not fight the world.

I couldn't agree more. The late comic Bill Hicks, talking about the first Gulf War, has one of my favorite quotes on this: "people got a boner over the technology, and I have to admit....it was pretty incredible watching missles fly down air vents. Pretty unbelievable. But couldn't we feasibly use that same technology to shoot food at hungry people? Know what I mean?"

I would feel totally different about Republicans if they were atleast morally consistent, but they develop these huge blind spots when it comes to the vast majority of the world, it's pretty disgusting. Bill Hicks also used to discuss the idea of Christian presidents engaging in war, and would quote one of the ten commandments: "Thou shalt not kill. Huh. Didn't know this rule had a footnote. Thou shalt not kill...oh, unless you really want to, I see."

Why is it that most people overlook this kind of stuff?

I think Dave Barry once said that "the difficulty of the line dance is inversely proportional to the collective IQ of the group performing it". I don't know how much that pertains to this topic, but it must play in there somewhere...

    It's all about appearances.

John F Kennedy once said that, in politics, it isn't what one DOES that counts, but how one APPEARS.

By being the first public figure to see this, and openly say it, JFK demonstrated his unique insights into how gullible the folks are out there in the great Heartland.
