My Most Popular Idea Yet:

I think I might have found a solution to the abortion debate. Usually the question revolves around when the fetus becomes a person. At conception? At four months? Later, earlier? Here's my idea: I honestly think we should raise the age at which someone can be aborted to...oh, I don't know, let's say 60 years old.

Stay with me on this one.

If parents are able to abort their child until they are 60, both sides of the debate will ultimately be happy. For the pro-choice folks, abortion would remain a legal option. And for the pro-life people...well, think about it. If you know that your parents could rub you out at any time during your existence, you will never, ever, take life for granted. You'll always be aware of just how precious life is, and isn't this the precise goal of the pro-life movement, to instill in people a deep and abiding respect for God's work?

Think of all the positive consequences: kids will do so much better in school. If little Billy brings home a D- on his math test, just explain the concept of Russian Roulette and he'll be a straight A student from that point on. Or, let's say you are elderly and you want your daughter to bring the grandkids over for Christmas dinner. "What's that?" you quietly ask, "You're busy and can't make it this year?" The 'click' of the hammer will serve as a loving yet gentle reminder that, in fact, they will be there for Christmas dinner and, more importantly, they will like it.

I don't know, I really think this can work. People will still have choice and, if the killing is left up to the parents, surely there will be fewer abortions. Let's begin contacting our representatives in Congress and see if we can get a little momentum going, although I still need to come up with a catchy label for my proposal. Am I anti-pro-life? Livingly pro-abortive? I can't figure it out, we'll work on it.

Thanks.

If what you suggest comes to pass, George HW Bush and Barbara would have the right to terminate their oldest son's life.

You couldn't be suggesting THAT, could you?

reotroactive abortion...catchy...you may have something here.

At least it is something newer to talk about than the abortion issue itself. Can you believe people are still debating about abortion?

Matt, you should definitely suggest this to the Chinese government. They already have a two-child limit. If they add to that an abortion-till-sixty clause, then they could very well end up with a perfect, utopian society. Just think. Parents would have two babies and then wait to see how perfect they would become. At the first signs of imperfection, they would abort and try for a better child. And keep on this way till...

My dad has always advocated retroactive abortion. I think his idea would be to perfect a time machine first, and to then go back in time to when particular politicians or world leaders were still in utero.

Sadly, Georgina, I fear people will be debating abortion until the end of time.

Stan, great comment! It does seem like China could be a good location for the Wonderful World of Eugenics!

The current debate in the UK is not only about reducing the number of weeks at which a terminatin can take place but also, at the same time, a scientific body has recommended that the government allow parents of IVF babies to choose the sex of them, and to allow human embryos to be inserted into the wombs of animals 'for research purposes'.

Now, I'm pro-choice. I strongly dislike the no-hopers... sorry, anti-choicers.... no, sorry, pro-lifers, but if scientists keep on trying to justify Frankenstein science which sets most people's teeth on edge, there is going to be one heck of a backlash which is unfortunately going to include a retreat on abortion. Scary.
