Republicans Outraged By Corruption Of...Well, A Corrupt Program
During the 90's, sanctions imposed on Iraq led to a massive number of death's due to malnutrition. More than half a million children died and god knows how many adults. So how did the international community respond? With compassion? Obviously not, they, including the US, decided to start up the Oil for Food program. In other words, we had no problem exploiting the death of half a million kids as a way of getting more fucking oil. And by "we", I mean all of us, the States, France, Russia, etc...pretty much every country looked at those dead kids and saw nothing but opportunity. So here we are post-Iraq war, and republicans have decided to freak out about the scandals that were involved in the program. Has it not occurred to anyone that the Oil For Food program was itself a scam? The sentiment that "Hey, unless you want a million dead kids on your hands, better give us the oil" is so overwhelming greedy and callous that it's hard to believe anyone took the program seriously to begin with. So, let's get a few things straight:
After-the-fact corruption did not ruin Oil For Food, because the program itself was a form of corruption.
The next time we decide to do something about starvation, don't initiate another Oil for Food program...initiate a Food Program. Display actual compassion or shut the fuck up, okay?
If the UN had rolled over for the US and gone along with the Iraq war, none of these investigations would be happening. This is punishment...we happily looked the other way for years, and it is only post-war that republicans decided to turn on their selective outrage. And Clinton was president during the sanctions regime, so he gets as much criticism as anyone else, this is not some purely one-sided thing. I'm just weary of hearing this BS outrage from republicans, since it's premised entirely upon selective-amnesia.
Thanks...

Not only did we not give them food, but what food did get distributed was the puny end-result of the trickle-down effect from what we did allow (selling oil). After countless people took their share, starting with Saddam of course, there was no doubt enough left to buy a few loaves of bread for a few poor people.

The sanctions against Iraq – which may have resulted in the deaths of more than one million Iraqis – but which didn’t affect Saddam personally, or his henchmen, was analogous to punishing the starving inmates in a Nazi concentration camp, but doing nothing about their guards.

I don't think they're outraged by corruption of a corrupt program as much as they are outraged that the corruption is being made public knowledge. They're a bunch of doofii, plain and simple.

Hi Stan! It seems pretty clear to me that, when you start up a deal with Hussein, you pretty much know that you are engaging in a corrupt deal, it's a given. For Republicans to now act surprised is pretty disgusting. "After countless people took their share ... there was no doubt enough left to buy a few loaves of bread for a few poor people." This is completely right and depressing. I'm just so tired of people in this country (both republicans and democrats) caring about these sorts of things only when it is politically convenient.
Richard! Perfect analogy. And you're right, the total of deaths did exceed one million. Which is unimaginable. A million...can you imagine if one million white people were to die in this manner? We'd never allow it, yet it happens regularly in African countries, North Korea, the Middle East, and we don't give a shit unless we can get something out of it. We are vultures.
Actually, Snave, you're right. Politicians hate it when corruption comes to light, it's like the mechanisms of their game is revealed, so they have to run around like chickens with their heads cut off and pretend to care. By the way, I wanted to ask you...have you ever read Don Quixote? I just started it a week ago...it's filled with extremely funny bathroom humor, and it made me think of your regular scatology updates. Anyway, take care!

Y'know Matt, I ain't never read Cervantes. They don't have a lot o' them books out here in these parts. Just kidding about this part of Oregon being illiterate, but no, I haven't ever read Don Q. Some folks tell me I should read Chaucer too... I flipped through the pages of Canterbury Tales once and found a line that something about how the "dog was liketh to pisseth upon the rose bush" or some such thing, and I was howling with laughter. Also, in one of Shakespear's (sp?) "Henry" plays, the guards are hanging out talking about beer, and they talk about how it increaseth the desire and dulleth the performance, or something like that, and then they mention urine, but pronounce it like "you-ryne". Snigger... ! Gawd, how I love that junior high gross-out shit!! 8-)>
