Worst President (Since The Last Really Shitty President)

In this post, Dadahead references a lively debate. I sort of agree with him...it's a relatively frivolous deal, but if nothing else it's fun. The topic: Is Bush Jr. the worst president ever? I tend to doubt it...it's not like this place was a pacifist get-away until Bush came along. I know, lefties supposedly love Clinton, but that spineless bacon-addict supported as many corrupt dictators as anyone else. Also, I think it's worth pointing out: when you have as many intelligence agencies as we do, the relevance of presidential power is greatly diminished. It's not like he's the ultimate authority over our nation's military resources. Sure, the president gets a fancy title and a nice office, but the CIA has been continuously involved with one secret war after another for more than fifty years, over-throwing democratic regimes, supporting dozens upon dozens of terrorist organizations. When you get away from the sanitized version of America's national identity things get much more complicated and ugly. If the goal of this debate is to find the bottom of the barrel, a better question might be: what's the worst American institution ever? The presidency? Congress? One of the intelligence agencies? The Cub Scouts? The David Hasselhoff fan club?

Clinton kicked severe ass to Bush Jr!!!

Yesterday I was watching a program about Andrew Jackson, and he sounded deplorable. And I saw another program about Andrew Johnson, and he seemed pretty darned horrible too. And there were some others who were extremely wretched in terms of trying to polarize wealth in this country.

The difference I see is not so much how horrible the person is as a human being, but how much damage he is causing. Because a lot of these other leaders didn't have the scope to affect things globally that your current Presidents have. In that sense Bush is definitely the worst. And if he is not the worst, it is only because we have had some major bastards run this country.

BTW, how come my blog is getting severaly fucked by Blogger and y'alls isn't? :-( When you try to post comments on my blog, you get a blank page!!!

Clinton, though I never liked him at all-ignoring Rwanda, adopting Bush Sr.'s Haitian refugee policy after saying he would reverse it, etc- is definitely preferable to Bush. In terms of worst, I guess I'm not sure who to go with, there are some good candidates. But, with you guys voting Bush, that's two against my one.

I think Dumbya is the worst POTUS ever, and I tend to look at it the same way Sheryl does. When looking at how much damage the guy is causing and at how long it will take to rebuild and recover once he's gone, if we ever can... I don't think any other president has been as influential in such a negative way, not just for America but for the entire world...

In the future, his presidency will probably be spun to the point that he will have nearly as positive an image as Reagan now has, and there will be a hardcore group of worshippers wanting to put him on Mount Rushmore, put his likeness on our currency, bury him in the empty tomb beneath the Capitol rotunda, etc.

That is, unless the media does its job and America wises up to what has been going on. Some previous presidents haven't been very good, but Dumbya has a blatant disregard for the House, the Senate, and the Constitution, not to mention the American people. For all their secrecy, the people he has surrounded himself with have a transparent agenda: maintain power at all costs.

Thus, he gets my vote, but only as "worst president ever".

The worst American institution ever? DeMolay comes immediately to my mind (junior Masonic group), as does the Christian Coalition. I still have a soft spot in my head for the Boy Scouts, or they would be right up there. How about the Young Republican National Federation?

Disclosure: I voted for Bush his first term. I thought his cabinet had some solid people that could be trusted to do a good job and Gore had too much of the "this is for your own good" attitude. Bush's second run I couldn't vote for either candidate. Both nominees were pitiful choices and unfortunately it doesn't look like we can expect better options down the road. Now, on to the rest.

I'm gonna have to differ with snave on the Rushmore comment. It'll never happen. Ever. Too many people think Bush is doing a poor job and then when you factor in the "Bush = Hitler" crowd there's far too many people against Bush for his head to ever end up on Rushmore. Is Bush the worst ever? It really comes down to what your idea of a president is supposed to be and do. Some would say that Truman was the worst for dropping the bomb on Japan. Then you've got those that feel FDR with his New Deal dealt the largest amount of long-term damage to this country. You've got Nixon and Carter, Clinton and Bush. Sheryl touched on a very good point in that the damage someone does is important but what kind of damage? Who decides if something is damaging or not? Looking at the examples above the A-bomb could be considered damaging to the country but so could welfare and social security.
